Liddell and Ortiz face off on TUF11
January 26th, 2010 by Colin
Chuck ‘The Iceman’ Liddell and Tito ‘The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’ are set to face off against each other on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter. Liddell has defeated Ortiz twice in the past, both times by TKO. Ortiz pledges things will be different this time around. In addition to claiming that he will be in better shape, Ortiz took some shots (no pun intented) at Liddell.
“I think [Liddell] had a problem,” Ortiz said, according to MMAjunkie.com. “A lot of people go through addiction. I think his deal was he was an alcoholic. He loved to party. When you have all the money in the world and you can do what you want, no one tells you, ‘No.’ You’re one of the baddest men on the Earth; no one tells you, ‘No.’ You can do what you want. Thank God that (UFC president) Dana (White) gave [Liddell] an intervention, and he’s sober now,” Ortiz said. “He’s been sober since November, and he looks like a different person. It’s awesome. I’m proud of him – really proud of him. A lot of people can’t do that. I kind of went through that myself, but I looked in the mirror and I realized that wasn’t the life I wanted to lead.”
Whether Oritz assertions are apt or not, round three is coming up with both fighters looking to recapture the spotlight.

McNabb/Hasselbeck to replace Favre?
January 26th, 2010 by Colin

Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports if you’re Vikings general manager Rick Spielman, whose job it is to procure talent for the team, you have to check on whether the Philadelphia Eagles are ready to move on without QB Donovan McNabb, as rumored. With McNabb, who might cost the Vikings two second-round draft picks plus Rosenfels, the Vikings could retain their league-wide buzz.
It’s unclear whether new Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll wants to go with QB Matt Hasselbeck. McNabb and Hasselbeck — they would seem to be the Vikings’ only options among proven QBs if Favre decides he’s finally had enough.

Herschel Walker to make MMA debut
January 21st, 2010 by Colin
NFL great Herschel Walker gets ready to make his January 30th MMA debut with Strikeforce. Walker, age 47, has never been in a professional fight in his life. It was announced this week that Walker will face off against Greg Nagy in Florida. Many people remember Walker for his heroics on the football field, but he is looking to make a new name for himself as a professional cage-fighter. Not everyone is happy about it.
“I think it’s ridiculous,” said UFC President Dana White, according to the AP. “People think we’re anti-competition? We’re anti-dumb competition. Doing stupid things like this, putting a 50-year-old guy in the Octagon for the first time, and then going out there putting out press releases like it’s a big deal because you signed a 50-year-old Herschel Walker? Are you serious?”
The UFC has a strangle hold on MMA and is by far the most popular fighting organization. Strikeforce is trying to make a name for itself by signing Walker. Walker says he is ready to fight.
“MMA is the No. 1 sport out there for me,” said Walker, according to the AP. “I love competition; I don’t want to lose at anything. I’m a little bit older, but I love competition.”
Will Walker’s stint as a fighter be as sucessfull as his exploits on the field? Only time will tell.

Rampage to return to UFC and face Evans
January 21st, 2010 by Colin
Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson will return to the UFC this May to face off against bitter rival Rashard Evens. After coaching against each other last season of The Ultimate Fighter their rivalry became heated. Name calling and threats flew as the two fighters exchanged barbs, often until they were nose-to-nose. Jackson was set to face Evans at UFC 108 but he decided that his acting carrer was more important after he was cast as Mr. T. in the upcoming ‘A-Team movie’. With filming wrapped Jackson will return to the octogon for the first time since May 7th 2009. Evans is coming off a huge win against world-class fighter Thiago Silva. This is sure to be an exciting fight between two guys in their prime.

Changes to Pro Bowl Roster
January 21st, 2010 by Colin
Several NFL superstars will not be participating in the Probowl this year. New England Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady will miss the game due to a thumb injury. Houston Texans’ quarterback Matt Schaub will take his place. Schaub led the league in yards and completions. This is the first Pro Bowl he will participate in. Another big name that will not be heard from in Miami is Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald will miss the game with an unspecified injury. Fitzgerald finished the season with 1092 yards and 13 touchdowns. Replacing him is New York Giants reciever Steve Smith. Smith set the Giants’ single season record for receptions and finished with 1220 yards. Wes Welker stepped down from his Pro Bowl spot due to injury making way for Chad Ochocinco. Ochocinco has been selected to six Pro Bowls in his carrer. The NFC is on a roll with two straight victories. Who will win this year?

Penguins host Capitals in Highly Anticipated Matchup
January 20th, 2010 by Colin
The red-hot Washington Capitals are heading to Mellon Arena to face the always resilient Pittsburgh Penguins Thursday night. The Penguins defeated the New York Islanders last night, ending their seven game win streak. Evengi Malkin led the way with a hat-trick and Sidney Crosby scored two goals and four assists. Not to be outdone the Capitals squeezed out a narrow victory against the ailing Detroit Redwings, 3-1. This highly anticipated matchup is the first time the teams meet since the Penguins defeated the Capitals in a lopsided game seven last post-season. Who has the edge going into tomorrows game? My money, no surprise here, is on the Penguins tomorrow. They have better defense and playing at home never hurts either. Thursday nights game may be a foreshadowing of things to come in the post season. The game is sure to bring fireworks as these bitter east-coast rivals face-off.
